5 Basic Tips for Editing Wedding Videos

Editing wedding videos is an important task. You are molding a product that two people are going to cherish for the rest of their lives. That means that they could very well still be watching it fifty years from now, reflecting on the happy memories of that day. As the editor, you need to craft together a quality video that you will be proud of.


Here are 5 tips to help you get started:


1. Cut Out the Bad Parts

Shaky cameras moving to the next shot are not pleasant to watch, so don't include them. Ninety five percent of the footage shot that day should look professional and be usable. Don't include one second of video that makes you guys look like amateurs. Remember, if you include one bad clip, it's going to be seen for years to come.


2. More Is More

Usually as editors, we strive to cut our stuff down under the belief that less is more. Wedding videos are the opposite. It's a special event that is going to be one of the most important days in the life of the bride and groom. Give them as many memories as you can. They'll appreciate it later.


3. Try To Include Shots of Every Guest

Part of what goes into planning a wedding is the guest list. Some of the most important people in the bride and grooms lives are going to travel hundreds, even thousands of miles just to be there with them on that special day. Help them remember those people by including as many shots of the guests that you can--particularly if those moments include the guests doing something that will provoke a laugh.


4. Don't Go Overboard on the Effects

Effects and filters are nice, but only when they're used sparingly. If you're using effects and transitions all of the time, they quickly lose their value and go from interesting to annoying. Trust in the power of the images shot, combined with your skill of juxtaposition, to carry your editing and use effects to enhance what is happening, not carry it.


5. Have a Structure

IF you're working with a great videographer, then you're going to have a lot of footage to work with. It can be overwhelming, but if you have a structure and a plan, it will be a lot easier. Your structure should be pretty linear; guests arriving, ceremony, cocktail hour, speeches, meal, dancing montage, etc. If you go into this with a plan, you'll come out with a pretty good video.
